Device type: Measurement monitoring
The watchdog can be used to monitor programs (e.g. WinSpec Automation) for Windows 7 / XP / 9x / NT, which perform unattended measurements or similar tasks. Prerequisites are that the program has the ability to reactivate itself after a restart of the computer and the program periodically writes a file to a specific directory. If no new file is written within the period defined by the user, then a hang up of the program or the operating system is suspected and an attempt is made to restart the computer, first software then hardware.

The Watchdog consists of a hardware module which is connected with a computer by a serial communication cable, and the Watchdog software. The power supply or the reset button of the computer is switched via the hardware module. This allows the computer to be forced to reboot its hardware if the software restart fails. The program is easy to use. The user has to define the directory to be used by the program and the interface where the watchdog is connected. In addition, the period of time to write a file has to be set. Before starting the watchdog program, you should start the program to be monitored.
The watchdog program regularly transmits signals to the hardware module. If no new file is written within the specified time period, the program will stop sending. The hardware module signals the error by a periodic signal tone. Now the error handling begins. The program tries to restart the computer. If successful the program restarts to send signals to the watchdog after restarting. This triggers the signal tone of the hardware module and restarts the monitoring cycle. If the program cannot restart the computer within 5 minutes, the hardware module restarts the computer by interrupting the power supply to the computer for 40 seconds.
If the program to be monitored cannot be put into a functional state, the error treatment periodically repeats itself at the predetermined time interval. If the operating system is suspended during a restart forced by the hardware module, the power supply is interrupted again after an hour. The same is true if the watchdog program should hang during the reboot.
